Seeking Part-time lab assistant


Aurora PhotoCenter, an Indianapolis nonprofit, supports visual artists working in photography through exhibitions, residencies, workshops, artist talks, and access to creative tools. Aurora is the only nonprofit of its type in Indiana that hosts continuous photography programming throughout the year; Aurora has the only rentable analog darkroom and digital imaging lab in Indianapolis.

We seek a Part-Time Lab Assistant to provide support in Aurora’s darkroom and digital imaging lab.

Job Title: Part-Time Lab Assistant
Job Category: Part-time, non-exempt
Location: 1125 E Brookside Avenue,  Suite C9, Indianapolis, IN, 46202
Regular Business Hours: Thursday-Sunday, 11am-5pm
Pay: $25 per hour
Hours: Approximately 12-16 hours per week, primarily on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Role and Responsibilities

Required duties include:
* Assist Aurora members, artists-in-residence, and visiting artists in the darkroom and digital lab by preparing equipment and chemistry and troubleshooting film developing, scanning, and printing issues as artists work
* Teach Core Skills Workshops program including one session each month on the basics of B&W Film Development, Color Film Development, B&W Printing, Flatbed and DSLR-based Scanning, and Digital Printing
* Assist with printing selected exhibition prints, Aurora’s fine print program, and jobs for clients
* Monthly calibration of darkroom enlargers and digital lab monitors

Qualifications and Requirements
* BFA or equivalent experience in digital imaging techniques and equipment, including the series of Canon Image Pro-GRAF printers, Epson v850 scanner, DSLR scanning systems, and Adobe Creative Suite 2026
* BFA or equivalent experience in analog imaging techniques and equipment, including black-and-white and C-41 color film development and silver gelatin printing
* Interest in contemporary photography
* Enjoys working with a diversity of makers and types of photography
* Works well with others and also independently

Preferred Skills and Qualifications
* Knowledge and experience with alternative processes
* Knowledge and experience with photobooks
* Knowledge and experience with large format cameras including 4 x 5 and 8 x 10
* Interest in current and evolving digital imaging techniques and equipment
