Photograms
2 hours; $30 per person

Photograms are a kind of camera-less photography made in the darkroom in which you place objects directly on a piece of photographic paper and then expose the composition to the enlarger light. The result is a black-and-white image in which solid objects appear white and translucent objects and materials appear in an almost “x-ray” effect. The contours of the objects are rendered in sharp shapes and lines, sometimes ultra-realistically.

In this photogram experience, you will begin by creating your composition in the light. We have all kinds of fun props to compose with — from animal and dinosaur figurines to dried flowers. You can also bring objects from your work or group that might have special significance for your group to incorporate into their photograms! The images in this gallery, were all made with the staff of Indy Glass Arts using their own glass creations!

We have plenty of workspace where you can spread out and really enjoy putting your picture together. This is a great activity for groups because you do this first part in the light, with everybody sharing props and creating together. After you’ve finished your composition, we take it into the darkroom and transfer it to a piece of photo paper for the exposure. Each participant can make up to three photograms during the session.

The whole session takes place under regular room lights or the safelight in the darkroom; there is no total darkness involved in this session.

8 x 10 Portraits
2 hours; $30 per person

In this outing, your group uses an old-fashioned, large format camera to make portraits of each other! This is a great way to commemorate a special event, such as a holiday or birthday. We can even work with you to incorporate your company or group logo or a speciality theme into the portrait background.

The large format camera is a Deardorff, one of those box cameras that you see in the movies where people duck under a cloth to compose and focus their picture. The magic of this experience is working with the historic camera, and the beautiful, very detailed 8 x 10 portraits that are possible with this camera. We will show you how to do everything — from loading the film holders, to composing your portrait with the camera, to processing the paper negative.

Each participant will get the chance to make a portrait of someone else and to have one made of them. After processing, you can take a picture of the negative with your phone to get a quick look and a jpeg of the results. After the session, we will scan and send your group leader digital files of each portrait. We can also mail you the paper negatives after they have dried.

The whole session takes place under regular room lights or the safelight in the darkroom; there is no total darkness involved in this session.

Cyanotype
2 hours; $30 per person

Cyanotype is a camera-less photography made with the sun or a special UV ray box, rather than in a darkroom. You place objects — such as plants — on top of a piece of photo-treated paper, and then use the sun to expose the paper. The result is an image that is an exact outline of the object. It’s a fun and magical way to engage photography! Although it may be new to modern people, cyanotype has been around since photography was invented in the 1800s.

Come explore the creative possibilities of this fascinating process. We will have many objects on hand to experiment and compose with, but feel free to bring your own, especially objects related to your company or group. Flat items usually work best, and cyanotype can be messy, so precious things like family heirlooms should probably stay at home. All other necessary materials will be provided at the session.

The whole session takes place under regular room lights or outside in the sun, weather permitting; there is no total darkness involved in this session.
