Major Gift, Naming of The Efroymson Gallery

Aurora PhotoCenter is thrilled to announce a multi-year grant from the Efroymson Family Fund, totaling $45,000 in program operating support over a three-year period. In recognition and thanks for the Efroymson Family Fund’s sustained support, Aurora’s Project Gallery will be named The Efroymson Gallery. This space primarily features current work by under-recognized and emerging artists, a focus that aligns perfectly with the Efroymson family’s long and deep history of supporting individual artists.

Currently on view in The Efroymson Gallery until April 15 is work by Boston-based artist Tsar Fedorsky, who photographed beautiful abstract compositions of water, rock, and sky in The Quarry Project. Upcoming exhibitions will feature the work of 2023 Aurora artist-in-residence Ian Lewandowski, who made portraits at the 2023 Indy Pride Festival during his two-week residency, as well as an exhibition of work by local artists that will be printed entirely at Aurora.

“We are so thankful for the Efroymson Family Fund’s generosity and vision, especially the support that Jeremy Efroymson has given Aurora and our mission over the years. This grant elevates our reach and ambition enormously, helping us maximize the potential of artist-centered programming in our new space,” explains Aurora Founder and Executive Director Mary Goodwin. “Philanthropy makes it possible for us to offer challenging, thought-provoking contemporary photography in our exhibitions, work that you won’t see anywhere else in Indianapolis. Grants, such as those from the Efroymson Family Fund, also support our residency and internship programs, as well as our public-access darkroom and digital imaging tools — all things that only Aurora offers for photographers in Indy,” continued Goodwin.

“The Efroymson Family Fund is committed to supporting cultural initiatives and programs that improve the quality of life for individuals and families in Central Indiana and beyond. Aurora PhotoCenter is a strong partner in that mission,” according to Joanna Nixon, Efroymson Family Fund Manager.

The confidence and continuity of the multi-year grant from the Efroymson Family Fund positions Aurora for growth in their new gallery and workspace at the Circle City Industrial Complex in the Windsor Park neighborhood of Indianapolis. In addition to Aurora’s exhibitions, residencies, workshops, and artist talks, the new space also offers access to creative tools with its rentable darkroom and digital work area.

In addition to the Efroymson Family, Aurora thanks the following for their long-term and continued support: Tube Factory Artspace, Herron School of Art & Design, Indy Arts Council, Aurora PhotoCenter Board members past and present, and all the individual volunteers and donors who believe in Aurora’s mission.
