Workshop Arts
A Photobook Case Study
Thursday, June 22, 7pm EST
Free and open to the public
Registration required

Please join Aurora PhotoCenter for a very special Photobook Case Study with Caleb Cain Marcus, designer and head of publishing for Workshop Arts. Just months into its first year, Workshop Arts has set itself apart by the quality of their books, as well as their focus on addressing inequalities in ownership of art books and the ecological impact of photobook publishing. Caleb Cain Marcus will be joined by the artists published by Workshop Arts in its first program to talk about their books and working with the new publisher.

Elizabeth Clark Libert will discuss making her book, Boy Crazy, which explores the legacy of sexual trauma through the eyes of a mother, woman, and artist raising two young sons. The book combines portraits of the artist and her sons, idyllic landscapes, and textual excerpts of communication between Libert and her perpetrator. Libert received her MFA from School of Visual Arts and is a lover of indie movies.

Walker’s Vein, by David Bernstein, combines color photographs of the upper Ohio Valley Region with brief texts that describe a single historical narrative from multiple perspectives. This approach provides a visual exploration of the towns, people, and topography of the region, but is also a statement on how memory and myth converge to create the truth of place and community. David Bernstein is a photographer, a trained historian, and a lover of cartography.

Rita Nannini’s First Stop Last Stop explores how the New York City subway connects communities to each other and the edges of the metropolis. Nannini traveled 22 subway lines and 600 miles of subway track to find what lies at the end of each line. She discovered the end of the line for one person is the beginning for another. When not behind her camera lens, Rita pursues her love of languages and tennis.
