First Friday & Local Lens Speakers Series: American Flags with Robb Hill

  • Aurora PhotoCenter 1125 East Brookside Avenue, C9 Indianapolis, IN, 46202 United States (map)

Capture the Flag, by photojournalist and documentarian Robb Hill, opens First Friday, July 3, 6-9pm in Aurora’s Efroymson Gallery. Over the past 30 years, Hill has made this series all over America as he investigates how citizens project personal ideas on a national symbol. Often playful and fun, sometimes quiet and profound, Capture the Flag offers a diverse portrait of Americans and their relationship to the Stars and Stripes. Hill will be in the gallery for the First Friday opening, and at 7pm he will give a talk about Capture the Flag and his work over the past several decades.

Also on view First Friday in Aurora’s Main Gallery: In his series Place de la République, Thomas Boivin presents a collective portrait of youth, vibrancy, and hope found in the famous Paris square. Over a period of four years starting in 2018, Boivin photographed a wide array of young people, asking them to be present briefly for his 4 x 5 camera, stopping for a moment out of time. The portraits feel direct, immediate, intimate, timeless, and timely: In 2026, as many countries grapple with loss of individual freedoms, Boivin’s portraits hit home as a reminder that people make a place.
